Baz Luhrmann

Baz Luhrmann (Director) has achieved success in film, opera, theatre, and music. With designer Catherine Martin, he is the founder and director of Bazmark Inq. He conceived and directed the stage version of Strictly Ballroom. Luhrmann has staged several classic and original productions for the Australian Opera including Lake Lost (1988) (Victorian Green Room Award for Best Director), Puccini's La Boheme (1990) (MO Award for Operatic Performance of the Year), and a Hindi interpretation of Benjamin Britten's operatic version of A Midsummer Night's Dream (1993) (Victorian Green Room Award for Best Director). The production was invited to the Edinburgh Festival becoming the hit of the Festival winning the Critics' Prize.

At the beginning of his Red Curtain Trilogy, in 1992, Luhrmann brought Strictly Ballroom to the screen, marking his debut as a film director and co-writer, premiering at the Cannes Film Festival (Prix de la Jeunesse, three BAFTA's and eight AFI Awards). Luhrmann developed, co-wrote, produced and directed William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (four BAFTA's, four Berlin Film Festival awards and an Academy Award nomination). Most recently Luhrmann directed, co-wrote, and produced Moulin Rouge which grossed over $170 million dollars worldwide (National Board Review, Producers Guild of America and three Golden Globe Awards). It was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, winning for Art Direction and Costume Design.
